How do we get a copy of a birth certificate if we moved out of the home state?

My future husband is from Buffalo, New York; we live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We need a copy of his birth certificate for our marriage licence. Is there a way to get a copy without going back to New York, we can't afford to make a trip back to Buffalo a few weeks before the wedding? Or do we have to go back to Buffalo? How do we get a copy of a birth certificate if we moved out of the home state?
Write to the Register of Vital Statistics for Buffalo and request a certified copy. Sometimes this office might be located in the city, sometimes in the county. There will probably be a nominal fee, such as $5 or so to cover costs.
