How do you obtain a foreign birth certificate? Who do you have to contact?

My father is 65 years old and has misplaced his birth certificate due to several moves over the years. What department or government agency do we need to contact in order to get a legal copy of his original birth certificate?|||It really depends on where he is born. In order for me to get a copy of my birth certificate (I was born in England), I had to contact the State department of the U.S., but my father was in the military, so I WAS a United States citizen - just born abroad.





If your father knows the hospital that he was born in, then contact that hospital, if it's still around. Otherwise, contact the state department of the country he was born in, or check with the most local of the governments and let them guide you to the right place.|||Vital Statistics in his home land/country. And take it from there! Good luck!|||Get in touch with the Consulate of the country your Dad is from, they should be able to advise you. Is there any particular reason that you need it. My parents are Italian and they haven't had possession of their birth certificates since they came to this country more than 58 years ago.|||Talk to the embassy of his birth country. They can inform you as to how to procced (they can also sometimes provide you with the forms for replacement birth certificates).
