My child will be born in Italy in December, the mother is Italian and I am American. I was wondering what steps I need to take to make sure the child will have an American birth certificate and American citizenship.How do I get an American birth certificate for my child born in Italy?

The child's birth certificate will never be US - it will always be Italian. You are born where you are born. But you must get the child a US Passport as soon as you can, using the CRBA (always keep it safe!). When traveling, the child should enter the US with a US Passport to be considered a US citizen at that entry. The child can have dual citizenship with Italy, so an Italian Passport needs to be gotten as well. You do not get an American birth certificate if the child is not born in the US. It will have an Italian birth certificate. Make sure you get a "long-form" birth certificate which indicates citizenship of the mother and of the father. If you are not married, you will have to prove paternity - DNA tests all around. You have to prove you are a US citizen and resided in the US long enough to be able to pass on US citizenship to offspring. Take baby, birth certificate and hospital records, baby's passport photos, your US passport and additional identification to the nearest US consulate to baby's birthplace and register birth to US citizen while abroad and get baby's US passport. NEVER allow baby's passport to expire. Guard that document with your life. Baby can only enter/exit on US passport.
