How old do you have to be to keep your birth certificate?

Do you have to be 18 to keep your birth certificate? Can a minor keep ownership of their birth certificate or do their parents have to keep their birth certificate?

Can a parent give custody of the birth certificate to the minor? How old do you have to be to keep your birth certificate?
You just have to be responsible enough not to lose it because they are a pain, and expensive to replace.
custody of the birth certificate, Lol

You can hold a copy at any age. It wont give you magical powers. How old do you have to be to keep your birth certificate?

How do I get a birth certificate with just my social security card?

I lost my birth certificate and I'm eighteen and I wanted to know how could I possibly get my birth certificate. Also how could I get it all by myself because I do not have family. How do I get a birth certificate with just my social security card?
Your Social Security Card is of no use in getting a copy of your Birth Certificate. To get your Birth Certificate, contact the Vital Records Office in the town/city where you were born. They usually want a copy of a drivers license or some government issued photo ID, your birth date and parents' names. There is generally a fee around $10-20 and you might be able to find a form on the towns' website.

You should be able to do this through the mail, but contact the Vital Records Office.

What is the fastest way to get a birth certificate?

I need to sign my child up for kindergarten this year and I can't seem to find his birth certificate anywhere! My husband and I split and the apartment where the kids and I were living in burnt down due to an electrical fire. Our home town is like 900 miles away and I have no records for any of my kids and need to get his birth certificate as soon as possible. Does anyone know the fastest way to get this done? What is the fastest way to get a birth certificate?
Definitely www.vitalcheck.com (as the person above suggested). You have to go get a form notarized (to prove you are the parent) and fax it to them. It's more expensive when they overnight it, but it's definitely the fastest way to get an out-of-town birth certificate.
When I had to get a copy of my birth certificate I just went to Vital Statistics and my brother had to show his ID to prove that he was my brother and I paid for the certificate and received it about 10 minutes later.

Soo.. just find where your local Vital Statistics is, walk in and tell them you need a new birth certificate for your child. You'll probably just have to show your ID.What is the fastest way to get a birth certificate?
Man, you have had some horrible luck lately. Fortunately, I know the answer to your question. If you know the county and state where your son was born in, you could call the Vital Statistics department there and see what they can do for you. If that doesn't work, try www.recordssitereviews.com and I know for sure that they can get you what you need. They have records for every state from birth, criminal, marriage, and death records. This site is totally thorough and really quick to turn all of your questions into answers. I needed to find my driving record and it was like a snap of my fingers it was so quick. Their staff are totally helpful too so if you do have other questions or even need other information for your children, they will be able to get it for you. Hope this helps. What is the fastest way to get a birth certificate?
Contact the Board of Health or the Health Dept. in the city where your children were born. They can make copies for you but they will no doubt charge a small fee. It's the only place you can get them. Call both places in that city %26amp; get the info you need.
call the doc where your baby was born .The hospital ll provide a birth certificate then u need to give this to

' Birth and death registration office" under health department office in your city. Then within a few days you ll get your baby's birth certificate.
call the hospital you gave birth at and tell them the situation and they will send you a birth certificate as fast as they can send you one.
Contact Vital Statistics in your area, they will tell you what to do. You're going to probably just have to pay for a new one.
I got my daughter's through this website. http://www.vitalchek.com/ They contact the appropriate government agency for you and you order it online.

    Birth Certificate?

I have had a DNA test done and also have parental responsiility for my daughter but my name isn't on her birth certificate her Mum was supposed to turn up at the registry office to have it done but never arrived can I get my name put on without her consent or by order of the court?Birth Certificate?
Call the office. I had my sons changed
yes just go down there with the papers proving the dna with and they should reissue one.Birth Certificate?
    yes get a attorneyBirth Certificate?
Yes you can have the court put your name on the birth certificate. And you will also be obligated to pay child support. That is usually how it works. You get a child support order put in place and the birth certificate will be changed, especially because of the DNA test.
If the mother doesn't do it (and she is the only name on it), you can't without her consent unless you have the court order it. If by parental responsibility you mean that the court has ordered that you are the primary caregiver it should not be a problem. If you have custody of any kind and the DNA test, you can get a court order.
as far as i know you can go through the courts to get this done but i would contact the mother one more time and see if she will co-operate. if not you should bring evidence of d.n.a. results to your solicitor and take it from there...r
After the DNA test is done and paternity is established you can send the paperwork along with a new birth certificate request and have it done
    court order huni
not sure how it would work but talk to a solictor and they will be able to help you more
once you have a dna test then you are legally allowed to have your name on the birth cert.

    Birth certificate??

If the father didn't sign the birth certificate, does he have any rights to the child? She already filed for Child support, if he was to give up his parental rights...would he have to pay? Paternity has been established, he's the father.Birth certificate??
If he's the father he has parental rights. Which means he also has to pay support. The question of what if he gave up his parental rights, would he have to pay: depends on the state you're in, but my question would be why would he want to cut himself out of his child's life? Just so he wouldn't have to pay? That's pretty low and he should really think about the long term costs to him in abandoning his child. Both to him, and his child...
He cannot give up parental rights without her the mother agreeing. If she does then she also gives up any %26amp; all rights to child supportBirth certificate??
Yes he has all the right as a you have to a child unless he gives up his parental rights to someone else. Signing birth certificate is not an issue. The issue is DNA and genetic inheritance, Blood kinship to a father. However if a father gives up his parental rights, then he is entitled to pay child support unless the other party deny it. Regardless the situation, a child would one day know his/ her past history. Imagine if it was you to learn how one of your parent denied you knowingly that he was your parent, how would you feel?Birth certificate??
if he signed his rights over he would lose all rights and it wouldn't be out sealed documents. he would not pay but the sticker is will the woman let him sign off that is where it comes out. if she won't he can't and the judge then will go after him for support.

    Birth Certificate???

We went to the Court House when my daughter was 4 days old and now she is 18 days and when we ordered her Birth Certificate they got all the information they needed and told us it would be sent to our house. My question is dont they have to get it signed by me and her doctors at the hospital?Birth Certificate???
Funny I never thought about it. Mine is signed by my parents but I just looked at my childrens. They were not born in the same state and neither of them has signatures on them. They are typed. Both children being born in military hospitals you would think they would have had us sign. Maybe they did and we didn't get the one that is signed? Good question.

There is also no place on either that is for a signature.
    dont knowBirth Certificate???
I know that my mother signed my birth certificate at the hospital.

Maybe it is done differently today.Birth Certificate???
My birth certificate was signed by the physician that delivered me. Every country probably does it differently I am from the US and things may have probably changed since I was born.
parents sign it when they register the child.
My son's has the doctors signature and her physicians #

It has my social security number and his father's.

I don't remember wither one of us having to sign it.

Hmmmm.... there are no other signatures on it but the doctor's.
Me and my husband just when up to the council offices and give all the details and got it there and then. Maybe where i live is different to u?

    Hello Community,

I plan to go on a cruise to Cancun Meixco, in July of 2008 and I know I need passports, and I got them except 1, I had a baby girl in July and I'm guessing she needs one to be able to go so where can I get a birth certificate?? court? special places, hospital????? I live in Orlando AreaBirth certificate???
Call the hospital that she was born at. If they don't keep them there, they can tell you where to go. Sometimes it's a county bldg. or even another hospital.

Yes ~ children and babies have to have them too.

    hope this helps............Birth certificate???
Contact the county in Orlando area that your kid was born. Try to look at the phone book and You can call the county worker and You will receive it 2 weeks after that. The birth certificate in the hospital will not legal and the one from the county is important. I urge you to make a passport for her right away. Otherwise, she can not travel with you. Have a good trip.Birth certificate???
U.S. State Dept, consulate or your local U.S. Post Office with the photos and birth certificate.

In PA they mail it to us.
I am not sure about Arizona... I live in Ohio and we pick up the birth certificate at our county health department. I know it is a different state but I hope this helps.
Call the hospital and ask them. In my state i had to pick it up at the courthouse. Of course it will be different in every state, but the labor and delivery will fill you in on what you need to do.
Here in CT you have to go to the town hall in which the town the child was born in. I believe they stay on file forever, so you can get a copy at anytime. I had to pay $5 for each copy here in CT. Hope this helps.

    Birth Certificate?

In the state of tennessee if the father is not at the hospital at time of birth can his name still be put on the birth certificate?Birth Certificate?
of course. why not? is he not the father cuz he wasn't at the hospital?
I know in most states (NY anyway) you can't put someones name on a birth certificate, they have to sign themselves. Ask when you go in.Birth Certificate?
In NC you can put the fathers name on the birth certificate and the only person that signs it is the mother.Birth Certificate?
I'm not sure about the state of tennesee, but I knovv in missouri the father has to be present to sign the birth certificate, they dont just allovv you to put vvhoever on it. The father has to be there to confirm.
I live in NC and they wouldn't let me put down my baby's father's name without him there. He couldn't make it and it took months (and a stupid DNA test) to get him on it!
I've given birth in MI %26amp; TX and in both states so long as you are married the father doesn't actually sign anything. If you aren't married that's another issue. It won't matter if he's actually there for the birth though - the paperwork is done later.

my legal name is NIMFA CABANAO TOLEDO III.and thats the way it is written in my birth certificate from NSO.Since my lll in NSO followed after my TOLEDO ,so in the US government they placed lll after TOLEDO coz that what shown in my NSO birth certificate.

But here in our country they put my lll after NIMFA BECAUSE they said that, thats the way how we placed the additional of our name without thinking that it will not coincide in NSO BIRTH CERTIFICATE.Birth certificate?
what is NSO??? Your not making CLEAR sense.Birth certificate?
US Government will follow your name as is on Birth Certificate, it's a birth certificate, there shouldn't be any errors in it, so they assume that that's how is supposed to be.

If the birth certificate is incorrect, you should had this change initially. If possible, I suggest changing your birth certificate first, then let the US government know that there's an error in your name and request to change your US paperwork.

    Hope this helps.

    Birth certificate?

Ok i have a really big problem!

I live in PA and i want to go get my drivers permit ASAP. I'm 18 years old! so i really need it! The problem is i lose my birth certificate so i plan on getting a copy of it. The other problem is to send for a copy of it you need a photo ID with your name and address on, and i cant get that because i dont have my birth certificate!! help!!!!Birth certificate?
You do not need photo ID to get a copy of your birth certificate. All you have to do is provide your name, date of birth, place of birth, parent's names and (hopefully you have not changed your name) provide a current address where the certificate can be sent. When you were born, no one submitted a photo of you for your birth certificate.
Can't your parents order a copy of it using their photo ID? Their name is on it too.Birth certificate?
If your state offers just a regular ID get one of those, just explain the situation to the DMV and they should work with you, I think that you can have a social security card in the place of a birth certificate to get a ID

    Good luck.Birth certificate?
The hospital in which you were born has a copy of your birth certificate. You should call them up and explain the situation. You will probably have to pay something money for it, but it's worth it.

Also, I know in NJ, they will take a valid U.S. passport if the birth certificate isn't available. Ask the DMV if that option is available in PA.
All you need to do is request for a certified copy of your birth certificate from the County Recorder's Office at the place or state where you were born. This can be done by mail or going to the office in person.
Call where you get your licence at and tell them your delema. Maybe you can have a notery confirm that it's you by using other forms of identification...such as SSN, mail, your parents ID and info, etc.
Try www.vitalcheck.com to get your birth certificate. It doesn't look like you need a drivers lisence to get it, just information about your parents, where you were born, etc. If you have it sent regular mail it is only $23.00, or $40.00 for fast shipping. Good luck.
See if you can use your school ID.
My son was robbed at gun point and the theives took his wallet. He had all of his ID in it, including his social security card. We found out the hard way about the catch 22---can't get a driver's license without a social security card, and you can't get a social security card replaced without a photo ID. Luckily I had saved the first temporary driver's license he had ever had and we took it to get the social security card and once he had his social security card, then they let him have his driver's license renewed.
See if you can use another form of id like your social security card or a student id %26amp; explain your problem %26amp; see if they will work w/ you to resolve it.
your parents should be able to get it

I am going to a achool in dubai,i was asked to get my birth certificate in english. The problem is ihave my birth certificate is in marathi so please tell me how to change the language before 1st august.I will give 10 points!!!!!!!!!Birth certificate!!!!!!!?
I would contact the place that holds legal copies of your birth certificate, explain your situation, and ask about how you can get a legal copy done with the English translation. If that doesn't work, then try contacting the closest embassy for your country and ask about how to get it legally translated.

    Hope this helps.
Can't you go to a translator or something...There are translators on the net if you type it into google.

If that doesn't work, EAT the people that said it!

By filing an affidivit in court, mentioning ur date of birth etc U can get a new birth certificate in English. U can conact an advocate in chennai or so of Tamilnadu. He will guide u the further process
tell yr pop to get it translated to English will cost him money to make it and cost u to drink it instead of sending it home for yr parents do agree
    there are two ways,

get the certificate trasnlated in english and get in attested ny the right person designated in the ministry of external affairs.

the second and easiest way is to request the Municipal Corpration to give you the birth certificate in English. In delhi I can get a certificate ( birth and death ) both in Hindi and English.

Go to the court house where you reside and go to the clerk of courts office--they can help you there.Birth certificate!!?
Call the city hall where you were born in, they would have a file for it. Take about 2-4 weeks to get a replacement. Some states offer if you just fax ID's you can get it in the mail.Birth certificate!!?
If you were born in the USA, each State has a record of every birth and can supply you with a certified copy as good as the original.

You can search on Yahoo! as follows:

birth certificate + state department + (state in which you were born)

    and follow the instructions given.

Good luck. Finding anything is made easier on the Internet.

    Birth certificate?

when i had my son last year my husband wasnt put on the birth certificate.. anyone know why ? or if there is a way he can be put on?Birth certificate?
Whose name was put on it as being the Father? I'm 56 years old, and recently when I applied for a passport, had to get my birth certificate....Lo, and behold, the man that raised me was not the name on the birth certificate.....someone else all together. I had to go to court to straighten this out. If you were married at the time, the name on it would be the name of your present husband......even if he is NOT the father. This is not your case I'm sure, but it was in my case.
I don't think your husband gave birth to the babyBirth certificate?
Did the hospital have him listed as the father? When you apply for a birth certificate, the information you provide is cross referenced to the record of birth. You may wish to request a new birth certificate with the father's name indicated. Since you're married to the child's father, this appears to have been an oversight and should not be too difficult to correct.Birth certificate?
contact the hospital where your son was born at
some states will require him to sign that he agrees that he is the father of your child.......check with city hall where son was born to find out what the requirements are and how to amend it.
Depends on the state that you are living in. Check with the department of health or your local courthouse.
Where I am there has to be a notary present when he signs the birth certificate....if there was not one available they will not put him on...You can go to the court house and tell them you would like to have him added to the birth certificate and pay a small fee...they will add him and send you an updated birth certificate.
check with that hospital he was borned in and see why his dads name isn't on the birth certificate

Actually, the Recorder's Office will ONLY have a copy if it was registered there by your parents or other person. You need to contact your state bureau of vital statistics and pay a small fee and send them some type of proof that you are who you say. It's a simple procedure and you can find the phone number in the white pages of your local telephone book.
You can request a copy from the county records office where you were born. You shouldn't need your parents. You need a birth certificate to confirm your date of birth, and also your citizenship (if born in the US).Birth certificate?
No you haave to prove how you exist. You don't need your parents. You just need to go where ever your city has the records and give them your state ID and SS card. You pay a fee and get you cert.Birth certificate?

I know here they always use the moms maiden name on the birth certificate. So why does everyone say you should be married (I agree that baby's should be born in wedlock!) so you both have the same name on the birth certificate? Does it vary from state to state?Birth Certificate?
Mothers maiden name is used just for identification purposes. Ive never seen a birth certifdicate that lists mothers name at the time of the birth. Mother's name can and often does change afterwards, but her maiden namew is always the same.
My sons birth certificate has my married name and maiden name on it. I live in Ca. It was optional to have the maiden name on there, so I hyphenated it. I am a big genealogy fan, and if 200 years from now one of my decedents wants to get more information on my side of the family it is easier to get.Birth Certificate?
I think it is more so that there is no confusion about the child's last name. Today, though, it isn't so important, since many women keep their maiden names after getting married. I know that if you are not married, you have a choice of which last name to give the baby - the mother's or the father's.Birth Certificate?
    i'am not sure about this..

You simply give the site your information and pay via visa and it will be mailed to you in about 10 business days. I am more then sure that you will not be able to enroll the child without a birth cirtificate.

If your child has a passport, that would work. I think what you have is enough to get her into school, but you'll still have to bring the birth certificate in within a period of time (10-30 days). They want the kids IN SCHOOL, not hanging around for paperwork.
You might be able to register her without it depending on how leniant the school is. Let them know your situation and how long it may take to get the birth certificate and see what they say. You have everything else so it shouldn't be a problem as long as you'll be able to bring it to them later on. Good luck!

    sorry
You will probably have to call the school and ask them, but here in our town you aren't allowed to register for school without one. We had to send away for a certified copy and they did enroll my child knowing that I would get it to them asap.
The school will probably give you a short amount of time to get it, but you need to get it soon. If you can't find it, call the health department of the county your child was born in, and they will connect you with whomever you need to speak to to get a new copy.

    Birth certificate?

    Birth certificate?

hi all, my daughter has a spanish birth certificate how can i change it to british? (where do i go) thank you.Birth certificate?
I thought I recognised the trademarks of this question (I answered a previous question of yours and put this idea into your head *sighs* Why did I do that and more importantly what was so complex about what I said that required you to repost this question and not ask me directly?).

---If the child is under a year old I suggest you see about registering the child with the British embassy as this will allow her to obtain a full British birth certificate as well as the one she currently holds (which makes things easier if you want to go back to the UK). --- this is quoted directly from my previous post.

You cannot trade a Spanish birth certificate for a British one (if you register the child with the British embassy she will get two birth certificates one recognised Spain and one in Britian). What happens is that you take your child's Spanish birth certificate (and a translation if necessary) your British passport (and passport or citizenship papers) and go to the British embassy and ask them for the forms to fill out to register a child under the age of 1 (one).

The advantage of having two birth certificates are mainly for people who will go back to their native country.

But hey.. if you're finding all of this too difficult to comprehend might as well give up on the second birth certificate. It's not really a big deal and it seems like it's beyond your understanding.
You can't change it. She was born in Spain.Birth certificate?
To your local registry office?Birth certificate?
You can't. You can change her name but you can't change birth certificate's. Christ think of all the aliens in the world that would want to get british birth certificates!!!!!!
u go back to spain thank you
british embassy. i think you might be able to apply for dual nationality aswell
Hello I may just say that if your daughter was born in Spain whilst you were serving there in our military service you can get information on how register it here but only up to a certain time

Take a look at the GRO site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
She was born in Spain so you cannot change it.You can get her a British passport
No need to change and it, and I doubt it is possible. You should easily be able to get her a British passport. A citizen of one EU nation has no trouble getting a passport in another EU nation. And besides, when she gets older she may quite like the thought of being Spanish.
    You make no sense
you must apply for british citizenship based on your natinality. contact the british govt.
    to answer your question ? any birth certificate of any country cannot be changed to an another citizenship or nationality ;

now ? perhaps you are talking about dual citizenship ? if so do come back .

    Birth certificate?

hi all, my daughters birth certificate is in spanish i want the certificate in english (british) can you HELP? thank you.Birth certificate?
Quite simple - find a translation agency of which there are many on the internet and they will be happy to prepare you a certified copy. Embassies won't undertake translations for you.Birth certificate?
    Which Spanish?

If it is from Spain , go the Spanish Embassy or Consulate and have them translate it. Same thing if from any other Spanish speaking country.

If you are in her country of birth, go the the British Embassy and have them translate it.

    Birth certificate?

For Some reason I never recieved my sons birth certificate he's 11mths. How and where can I get his ORIGINAL birth certificate.Birth certificate?
i live in Texas, and over here you have to go to the main court in the town your baby was born and go to the birth and death section, and they can get it for you for 30 dollars. all you do is fill out aform and they get it for you. they used to just give them out when your baby was born but now you have to pay for them, i dont know why.
You won't get one until you request it from your local Health or Records office. It's usually $10-$20, and you can get it by mail or by going in in person.

Depending on where you are in the US, it may be a county office, or it may be a city or state office. I know in Arizona, it's a county office.Birth certificate?
Here in alberta, you need to go to the alberta registrys or vital statistics . The same place that they have the drivers license. And here it costs $35.00 and you need to fill out a formBirth certificate?
Thats because you have to pay for them! go to the county he was born in to the courthouse make sure you have 20.00 bucks, it might even be more depending on where you live.
You actually have to pay for one. You just go to your local vital records and statistic office. I live in Utah and it was $15 bucks.
You can go to your states website and there should be a link to obtaining birth certificates.
Find your local County Clerk /Recorder office. You can get the birth certificate there. You do have to pay for them though!!
If your in the us go to the registrar recorders office located in the courthouse
good question! i was wondering too, thanks for asking, these answers helped me too!!
I believe you just need to contact your local health department! Good luck!

for science we need to make and element baby book, and we need to fill out information on a birth certificate, with information on the element. where can i print one out, not a real one because i know that's illegal, just a fake one.Birth certificate?
Use your own. Make a copy - white out the information then fill in the "fake information"

    Birth certificate?

I am 37 weeks pregnant and i was living with my fiance at the time of his death... when i was only 8 weeks pregnant... we had one son already and he signed the affidavit of parentage so he could be listed as the father... how do i go about adding him to this babys birth certificate now that he is deceased?Birth certificate?
I beleive thats a question for the Social Security Office. Thats more like a legal question, unless you come across an SSO worker. Good Luck

And for the birth certificate, you will be asked to fill out the paper, weather he is deceased or not you can put his name where it belongs. Sorry for the loss.
Depends on your state, however you should be able to do it at the hospital without any problems. The affadavit of parentage is not necessary to add someone to a birth certificate, it just means they waive the right to demand a DNA test before support is granted, etc.Birth certificate?
there is no prob in that u can just write his name at father's place in birth registration form and there should be something in which u can state the situation that he has expired.Birth certificate?
awww sweetie im so sorry i think you can just put his name on it you should ask your lawyer what to do
i think all you have to do is write his name on the line. I don't think he needs to sign anything.

they might actually use the word deceased instead of his name, I've seen that before.

Good luck and i am sorry for your loss.
You can just list him on the birth certificate...My husband didn't need to sign anything on the birth certificate. So Sorry for your lose.
Print it out , you can give the baby any name.

    I'm sorry he pass.

    GOD BLESS
In California, unmarried fathers have to sign a declaration of paternity. Ask the hospital staff (possibly before you go in for labor and delivery) how to go about this.

    Birth Certificate?

I need an official birth certificate and I heard you can get it online. What is a safe site to order from?Birth Certificate?
You need to call the "Bureau of Vital Statistics" in the city where you were born. Call directory assistance for the phone number. They will then send you a form to fill out and send back with a copy of your id. A few weeks later, you will have an official copy of your birth certificate.

    Birth Certificate?

I went to the National's Statistic Office to have mine registered and they said it was a fake copy and I need to file for late registration. I saw the list of documents I need to come up with for the late registration and I don't even have them. I don't have an idea who my father is and my mom is deceased. I have a passport though. Right now I'm preparing to leave my country (the Philippines) as I have found work abroad. My problem is that I need my birth certificate when I apply for Permanent Residency in Singapore. Any suggestions/advices on how I can go about in fixing this? I surely don't want to get into trouble with immigration. Thanks!Birth Certificate?
You should go to the hall of record (or whatever it is called in the phillipines) and explain your story. There should be a way to get you the documents, especially since both your parent's are deceased. If they can't help you, try asking them if they know where you should go to file and or obtain these records.

Good luck on your work abroad!

    Birth Certificate?

I know that many adoptees are very upset about altered birth certificates. I certainly understand why. What can adoptive parents do about the "fake" birth certificate besides having the original for their child as well? We adopted internationally and we have our daughter's original birth certificate complete with her first mother's name, address, hospital and city of birth, etc. To get our daughter a social security card and U.S. passport, we had to do a readoption, which includes getting a a birth certificate with us listed as the parents. I would not have gotten a "fake" birth certificate if it was not necessary. We have official adoption papers legally saying we are her parents, we don't need a paper saying we gave birth to her since we didn't. Do people not understand that adoptive parents aren't necessarily trying to hide adoption by having the birth certificate listing them as parents, or are people upset at adoptive parents who won't share the original birth certificat?Birth Certificate?
I think it has to do more with not sharing the original, or lying and not telling a child they are adopted.

What you did is perfectly reasonable and required. I see no reason why anyone would have a problem with it. The original is very special and should be kept secure for the child to have when they are older.
I could see it for reasons of coming to the US. It gives the child natural citizenship, for being the child of two US parents. In some cases, where an original birth certificate does not exist, one must be made, and they often find it's better if the adoptive parents are listed, rather than none at all. Mind you, all of this isn't for the sake of the parents or the child, but for state and federal records. A US birth certificate is the child's key to citizenship, social security, and government programs which could help them in the future, and will not be questioned the way some might question and Alien Identification Number.

If the child already has a US birth certificate, then I think it's silly to issue a new one unless the parents request it (I suppose some might have the preference to raise the child as a natural son or daughter). In that case, I would think the option should be offered, but not be mandatory.Birth Certificate?
I am adopted, and fortunately, my adoptive parents have never hidden that fact from me or anyone else. I'm certainly not upset or angry with them about not being able to get my original birth certificate. What does frustrate me is all the hoops I would have to jump through if any of my children get sick and are in need of something only a biological family member could provide. Most people have both the maternal and paternal sides of their families to rely upon, my children would only have paternal. Furthermore, what if I need something? My other frustration is that everyone should have a right to know where they come from. The non-id info my parents received is very vague. We really only have info on my biological mother's side of the family, and very little info at that. When my parents adopted my brother, they received a lot more non-id info on him. Its possible that my info is limited because we have reason to believe my bio. mother was very young, probably still in high school.Birth Certificate?
I too have always thought that changing the birth certificate was a silly thing to do. I mean, isn't a birth certificate about giving BIRTH. Why not just have certificate's of adoption? I have two younger brothers who are adopted, and I felt cheated (as a biological child) that their names were on my brother's birth certificates. It just felt WRONG. It wasn't that I felt I had any stronger claim on my parents than the boys did, but I felt like the fact that they were adopted was something special, and that changing the birth certificate was, well, like trying to make it something dirty and hidden. I guess I didn't have any logic for it at the time, I was only 9 or 10 when I found out, so it was really more of a gut reaction, but it upset me.

My other 3 I didn't even request a birth certificate until months and years after they were born, when I went to the state vital records office, stood in line, and received the birth certificates within minutes of putting in the paperwork and the money. Is it legal to keep a digital copy of a birth certificate for family genealogy and records purposes?

I notice a 'small print' on many birth certificates that it's illegal to make a copy or use the birth certificate for any illegal purpose ... certainly it's o.k. to keep a digital copy as part of family history or genealogy records, no?Is it legal to keep a digital copy of a birth certificate for family genealogy and records purposes?
Gosh, I have never seen that disclaimer on a birth certificate, but it is true, whether it is on a birth certificate (or any other official document) or not. In other words, if a cousin of yours dies, it is illegal for you to obtain a copy of his birth certificate, open bank accounts, get credit cards, buy houses and cars in his name using that birth certificate to get the ball rolling.

Another way to look at it is this: it must be okay, because you can download copies of birth (and other) certificates from www.ancestry.com (and other sites). Official records are public documents; so, they are available to the public. Of course, much of the time you need to prove you are related and/or why you want a copy of the documents, but after 70 years or so even that goes away. (Gee! Doesn't the Government know that some people live longer than 70 years? Who is the most vulnerable to I.D. thieves?)

So, yes, it is okay to have a digital or hard copy of a birth certificate, or death, or marriage, or even passports/immigration documents/naturalization documents, etc. (Even when they tell you not to: after all, those same Government agencies that tell you to not copy them are the ones telling you to carry a copy of said documents whenever you leave the country.)

So, copy away. Just make certain said documents are either yours, your spouse, your children...or your ancestors (which, please remember, does not include aunts/uncles/cousins/siblings).
Thank you, Voters !!! Yes, this is a legal question, but the real ban is on documents being used for illegal purposes. As to raised seals, stamps, etc., my "original" birth certificate has neither....

Is it legal to keep a digital copy of a birth certificate for family genealogy and records purposes?
You are asking about a legal technically. The only birth certificate that is considered "Legal" is one issued by the county of birth, it can be the original or a certified copy. and can be used in a legal or court situation..

Digital copies of legal document cannot be used for legal identification. In other words they cannot be used in a court of law to establish entitlement as a heir to an estate.

The is nothing illegal about having a copy (either a copy of an original or digital copy) for genealogical purposes. I don't know what you mean by records purpose, but the copy for genealogical purposes is just the a copy. Records are usually a term used as a reference for legal copies. Is it legal to keep a digital copy of a birth certificate for family genealogy and records purposes?
    Niki,

I think the warning about making a copy is intended to warn people about forging the document. An official birth certificate usually has a raised seal or other official imprint or stamp that certifies that the document is real, and originated from a governmental agency.

If you tried to make a copy, complete with the certification forged, that would be illegal, and if you attempted to use that forged document for some legal purpose, like applying for a driver's license or for voting registration , even though it might be your own birth certificate, it would probably be subject to legal action.

But that's not what you are doing. You are making a simple copy without forging the raised seal or other original stamps........ so don't worry.

In addition, if you searched online at Google for images of birth certificates, you would see very, very many.
    http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch%26amp;hl鈥?/a>
    Absolutely.

An illegal purpose would be fraud or id theft. Genealogy, meaning research concerning family connections is a totally valid purpose.
Yes you are OK for genealogy purposes....what they mean is to pass yourself off as that person using the certificate or copy of the certificate........................
What would be illegal about genealogy records?

Is asking for the President for his original birth certificate such a bad request?

I don't understand, birther or not.. why is wanting to see Obama's original birth certificate such a horrible request that people get offended and offensive? People say that showing his original birth certificate won't satisfy the birthers, but is that the reason they aren't releasing his birth certificate? If he is really born in the United States then there is nothing to worry about. I don't understand why people get so worked up for something as simple as asking for the President's birth certificate. Is asking for the President for his original birth certificate such a bad request?
His birth certificate has been shown and authenticated several times.*
No, just a stupid, baseless, and pointless one. It's not a matter worth discussing. Ignore the birthers and they'll crawl back into their holes. Is asking for the President for his original birth certificate such a bad request?
    No of course not.

Asking for it repeatedly after he's already produced it is a malicious habit though. Is asking for the President for his original birth certificate such a bad request?
Obama must be aware of the "birther" groups by now; so why doesn't he just produce the d^*#* birth certificate?
further, why has he spent $900 to keep it private.
How many times do you need to see it?

    And will it matter.
Well, it was presented and seen.

It's also a phenomenon that emerged with Mr. Obama and wasn't even targeted at any other major nominee for Presidential office.
think that it should be required to even run for office
You can't fight the media, and the media is telling most of the idiots in america not to question it, but rather throw insults at those whom dare to request such a thing. Just look above. Insults most of them. They can't do anything but call it stupid, ignorant, racist, nothing but insults.

Some at least try to go halfway and act like they don't know the difference between a birth certificate and certificate of live birth.

And so it was, the media won, and watch as the insults fly.
Apparently conservative justices, Scalia and Thomas, already saw enough or they damned sure would be hearing the lawsuits.

I've never seen George Bush's birth certificate. Have you?
    Yeah its a bad request

why dont you ask him for his passport and SS card...what are you.. some detective?
Papers, please. Papers, please. (Spoken in a German accent)

ADDITION: The FBI and the CIA do extensive background checks on anyone running for federal office, so they would have found out if Obama was not born in this country. Secondly, he HAS shown his birth certificate. And thirdly, Obama is not wealthy enough to pay for a cover-up this large. So there.
Because he's their Messiah and in their eyes, he should be President regardless...

If he were just some "typical white guy" that was a conservative, they would DEMAND he show it and if he were as resistant as he is now, they would probably literally march into the White House and tar/feather him.

    The hypocrisy is stifling.
Right wing conspiracy be gone Hawaii has shown his birth certificate many times you guys just can't accept it.
would this type of question, be put to rest already.!
Don't you understand He is larger and more important then the law. Perhaps when his ratings fall the courts will show a little back bone and pursue the question
and all the other documents being withheld. black out whatever you want and leave the proof.
"why is wanting to see Obama's original birth certificate such a horrible request"

It';s already been firmly established that he was born in Hawaii in 1961. His birth certificate was released. The birthers just dreamed up excuses as to why its not valid. The issue is closed. Nobody but a handful of kooks continues to pursue it.
You can ONLY get COPIES. You need to check the Hawai'i LAW on vital records such as birth certificates.
That's an excellent question. Why don't they just produce it and let's all move on?
I've never seen my long-form birth certificate. My parents only received the short-form one when I was born. If I want to get a passport, a state ID card, apply for a job, etc, the short-form birth certificate is the only one that is required. The short-form birth certificate is also the one that Obama has presented.

Both of my parents, all of my grandparents, and seven out of eight of my great-grandparents were born in the United States.

Since I never had a copy of my long-form birth certificate, does that mean that I was not born in the US? No, of course not.
It's only stupid after it's been shown. It has been shown. Now its stupid.
Main reasons people get upset about it, is that a birth certificate is actually a protected record (as it is one of the documents someone can use for identity theft) and NO private citizen has the right to demand it from another. Add to this, no private citizen has every tried to demand this of a president before. (And there has been at least one president in the past who their natural birth status was actually in question.)

In addition, in this specific case Obama has already released his short form... and it was verified as being accurate per the Hawaii government in several interviews... and the birthers are still claiming it is fake. And People in the record department in Hawaii have confirmed that they have seen his original BC and that he was born in Hawaii, and the birthers still say he was not... add in that there is not even an option to get a copy of the long form they keep talking about on the Hawaii site... and you can see that it will not matter what Obama presents to them, they will continue to say it is all fake.
I don't have one friend who still has their original birth certificate. Either parents loose them moving around or, if they've given them to the kids, they're lost when the kids move, etc. By the time you're 25 or 30, if you've had any kind of busy, interesting life, the original document is usually lost. But you've already got your SS number, your driver's license and, if you need one, a passport so you don't really need your birth certificate for much and most people don't miss them when they're gone. If something comes up or you do want to keep one on hand, you write the Registrar of the county where you were born and apply for a duplicate - but it's not a copy of the original. It looks like a microfiche copy of a boilerplate legal form. Every county's form is different. I have my original (because I put it in a safe deposit box) and, because my parents and grandparents were still hassling about my name when I was born, it says "Baby Girl" where a name should be. Now there's a real good i.d.

Obama's birth certificate was posted online for months during the campaign. Hawaiian officials attested to its veracity. Annenburg representatives examined it in Chicago and attested that it was an official document, that it wasn't forged. It seems that the birthers are willing to accept no one's word and are waiting for God Himself to annoint Obama. When people stick to their beliefs in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, when they insist they're right while the world says they're wrong, something's not right.
Asking the President for his original birth certificate is not an unreasonable request Everybody has one. You can get yours online in a week for a few bucks. Why has Obama spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep his out of sight. o_O

Im changing my name soon and i need a certified copy of my birth certificate. I used my birth certificate to get a passport before. How do i know if my birth certificate is certified?
To get a certified copy of you birth certificate in Australia you take the original birth certificate or the copy that you got from the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages. You photocopy a copy or a number of copies if you need more than one copy.

Take these photocopied copies and the original along to a Justice of the Peace in your suburb or town. He or she must site the original before they can certify the copies. They will stamp and sign the copies. You retain the original and send a certified copy of your birth certificate for what ever purposes that you intend to use it.

I hope that this helps explain what you have to do to get a certified copy of your birth certificate.

I feel sorry for you since you have no communication with your relatives in the Philippines. So, your best is through an agency, as mentioned above, if you do not want to go home to the Philippines. Hopefully you'll provide them with the right facts and there should be no problem..but double check cuz that's oftly cheap for the price... Really... you might have some hidden charges in the long run. I got mine from Census- "National Statistics Office" my sister did it for me like two years ago and I remember we paid about P3,000+.. all i need was a special power of attorney, so she could get it. And by the way it is a certified copy of the original. good Luck sister!
Yes, if you still have relatives in Philippines you can ask them to get you a copy from the Municipal where you where born and send it to you here in U.S.A.

How long to get late registration birth certificate from Manila NSO?

NSO does not show a birth certificate. What do I need to do to late register my birth certificate, and how long does it take? How long to get late registration birth certificate from Manila NSO?
that's exactly what happened to my cousin. he was 18 years old when he filed for late registration. from what i can remember, you need an affidavit that can prove that the information that you're about to write on your birth certificate are true. just find a lawyer that can make an affidavit for you.

things that you might need to obtain an affidavit:

    parents marriage certificate

    public records

    health records (esp birth records)

2 witnesses(disinterested persons) of legal age

my cousin obtained an affidavit for this using his parent's marriage certificate and two witnesses. most of the time, just having two witnesses is enough; just like in the case of my grandparents.

after obtaining this, go to your birthplace's city/town hall and register. after registration, they will forward the information to the Philippine NSO.

I can't remember how long the process took place, but when my cousin gets online, i'll ask him and edit my answer and write it.

is this for your marriage too? you might also need a 'Certificate of No Marriage' (CENOMAR). you can file your authenticated birth certificate and CENOMAR at the same time. CENOMAR and birth certificates can be filed by phone through their helpline: (63) 2 7371111 . it took 10 working days for me when i filed for one.
I'll tell you something, if this is going to be used for immigration to the United States you can plan on the application spending a long, long time in the US Embassy's Visa Fraud Unit. They're going to send an investigator out and verify everything. Late registration is a major red flag.

Why does my birth certificate have blood type listed as just negative?

My birth certificate only has a negative sign in the space marked blood type. I was born in 1994 and my mothers blood type was RH-. What is my blood type if it only has - and is it rare? Thanks. Why does my birth certificate have blood type listed as just negative?
If you see a ( - ) or a ( + ) sign on your blood type, it mostly refers to your Rh blood group, named after the Rhesus monkey from which this blood grouping was first attributed. There are more than 10 ways to classify human blood groups. One is the Rh Blood Group and the ever-famous ABO Blood Group (A, B, O, AB).

Usually, Rh and ABO blood types are put together to further decrease the chance of blood incompatibilities during blood transfusion. Most Americans and Europeans (Caucasians) have Rh negative blood types, while Asians and Negroes have Rh positive blood type. This means that when a person's blood type is Rh negative, his blood does not have the Rh component in his red blood cells. Rh blood group incompatibility is most significant when an Rh negative woman copulates with an Rh positive man. If the resulting infant has Rh positive blood type whose blood leaks into the mother's blood circulation, the Rh negative woman will create antibodies against this component. So the next time that an Rh positive fetus is conceived, the Rh negative woman's blood will attack the second fetus.

This explains why many interracial couples (with an American mother and a non-American father) only have one child. Why does my birth certificate have blood type listed as just negative?
That is your RH type. Since you're mom is Rh negative they always test the baby. If you were Rh positive, and you and your mom's blood mixed while she was pregnant, she could form antibodies to the Rh factor. (also called the D antigen) This wouldn't usually effect the first baby, but if she had more kids that were Rh +, now that she has antibodies built up, they would attack the baby's blood and it could be born with severe anemia or even die.

Mom's with Rh negative blood are given a shot of synthetic anti-D (called rhogam) that prevents them from learning how to make antibodies against it.

    Just photocopy it.
Will they accept a copy of the certificate that you have or do they need an official copy. Also, I would check to see if there is a local office in which you can go to, maybe that way, you can just show the certificate.

Lastly, if this doesn't work, call and see if this is able to be done over the internet. I found this link, it looks like it can be done over the internet and mail internationally. However it may take a while

  • What will Obama do if the legislation requiring all candidates show their birth certificate passes?

Let's be very clear on this... There is a difference between a birth certificate and a certificate of live birth.

I know people who work at the DMV, and even there, a certificate of live birth is not a valid document.

This legislation is being put forth on the state level, Obama can not veto it.What will Obama do if the legislation requiring all candidates show their birth certificate passes?
Ignore the Law like he ignores so many other Laws

17 year old kids have better " proof of age " than Obama offered

Even his Certification of Live Birth was altered

    Obama's 1961 Certification listed his father's race as " AFRICAN " in 1961

NO Official Documents listed " race " as " AFRICAN "

In 1961 even blacks referred to themselves as " N-E-G-R-O "

    Obama's mother's " race " was listed as " CAUCASIAN "

    If Obama's father's race was listed as " AFRICAN " ( which is a nationality NOT a race ) his mother's " race " would have been listed as " EUROPEAN "
    Lets BE clear.

Your information is false. I have a certificate of live birth from California, which includes all the gory details, is signed by the doctor and which is completely legal. Hawaii's short form is absolutely legal, and valid in any court of law.

Obama does not veto anything at the state level. The law in Arizona is subject to legal analysis, and is laughable. You have heard of the Constitution? The definition of citizenship is a federal issue. And one state does not get to tell another state that their legal records are invalid. What will Obama do if the legislation requiring all candidates show their birth certificate passes?
A birth certificate is whatever a state says is a birth certificate. All birth certificates in the US are based on the US Standard Certificate of Live Birth from the CDC. Even BCs in 1961 said they were Certificates of Live Birth. See this one: http://www.wnd.com/images/090728birthcer鈥?/a> Notice what it says at the top.

Hawaii says that this is their birth certificate: http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd113鈥?/a> Anyone born after 2001, and anyone who requests a certified birth certificate gets this and no other. It matches the State Department guidelines for a passport, the I9 requirements for proof of citizenship, the Little League requirements, and the DMV requirements in every state. It is a valid and legal certified birth certificate.

If the AZ bill passes, the AZ Sec of State says he will accept Obama's COLB. But the bill is unconstitutional and would be thrown out as soon as it hit a judge's desk. States can't put additional restrictions on Constitutional offices than appear in the Constitution, and states must accept the official documents of other states. So if Hawaii says the COLB is a legal birth certificate, and certifies that Obama was born in the state of Hawaii, AZ and every other state must honor that certification.

BTW -- Arizona hasn't collected doctor's and witnesses' signatures on their birth certificates since 1989. In 14 years, no one born in AZ after 1989 will be eligible for the AZ ballot. What will Obama do if the legislation requiring all candidates show their birth certificate passes?
He'll probably try to win without the support from Arizona. Truthfully, I'm not an Obama fan and am not just doubting his eligibility because he's black or democratic...but I do have some legitimate doubt and would like him to step up and show his real birth certificate. To be honest, I think he himself was born in the states, but think that because his father wasn't and due to the strict interpretation of this law, that it may cause dismissal.
I guess he will have to show it. Didn't he ever have a passport? I took my certificate of live birth when I applied for my 1st passport thinking it was the same as a birth certificate, but was told it was not the same thing and I needed to get a certified copy of my birth certificate and come back when I had it. No birth certificate, no passport.
The Certificate of Live Birth is the normal form issued by the State of Hawaii to prove birth. and Arizona is Constitutionally bound to recognize the evidence presented to them by the state of Hawaii (see Article 4, Section 1 of the Constitution.) The fact that the piece of paper isn't labeled 'Birth Certificate' won't make any difference in the end.
once again please please please answer this Ok Please explain how the 1st black president in the history of the US. How he could slip past something as basic as: Are you a US citizen Yes No? You would find this on any job application. Does YOUR job hire illegal immigrants?(your job is not the presidency of the USA) Do you think the highest office in the country, the most scrutinized position in the world even if you aren't black,do you think the govt would let something so basic slip past? Something a journalist of a high school newspaper would look into if they were investigating. Do you think 'whoever would have made this happen' wouldn't realize this most obvious flaw?

EDIT: and yet no clear answer to this simple question just more denial from moron birthers
He already showed his birth certificate. Since you seem uneducated on the subject, watch this video.

    http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politic鈥?/a>

The DMV and the State Department (Passport Office) were quite happy with my certified copy of a record of live birth. It seems only you have trouble.
Who cares..if you haven't noticed the Republicans are screwing their new voters already in Ohio and Michigan. When will idiots realize that this is not a Democrat / Republican thing any more. They are both screwing us and refuse to let any one else debate on the national stage. Everyone running should be allowed to debate. Even if it takes days.
There is no difference according to the Supreme Court. You've already lost buddy.

i dont believe were some one is born or there religious belief is importing

    for them to be President

i believe whats importing is there intelligence and actions and what there going to do for america
Federal Courts interpret the US Constitution, not states run by teabaggers. Even so, I'm sure Obama could give a **** about Arizona. It's not like he's going to win it either way.
He'll show the same BC we've all been looking at for 2 years.

The legislation is about 230 years overdue, but it will have zero impact on Obama.
Each state has its own laws concerning birth records.I don't like the man anymore than the next guy. But can't you find something else to complain about.
You should check with your friend in th DMV again, That is what my children used to get their drivers license, It also got them a passport.
I am good at making birth certificates all he has to do is call me and for a low fee of $50 i will make him a U.S born Citizen
Obama has his best Chicago underground document makers working on that as we speak.
You should try debating the policies of the administration because the birther issue is going nowhere.
I've had enough of this. Take a knife and slit your throat please.

    He'll produce it

Maybe he doesn't have a long form

I don't thing we know for sure

Why does a hospital require a birth certificate or baptism papers to release a body after death?

This is in Ontario, Canada so it might be a specific law here. I'm not sure and I can't seem to find any information about it through the Ontario government or the Canadian government.

The instance is that an uncle died recently at a nursing home, they sent the body to the hospital after identifying him, and now his son who's trying to get the body released to a funeral home has to produce either his birth certificate or baptism papers before the hospital will allow the body to be moved to the funeral home. We're trying to help his son find his birth certificate.

Is this something to do with the law about releasing bodies? Or is his son trying to gain access to his father's money, property, etc. through producing this form? Are we being mislead about why his son needs this form (we only have the son's side of the story to go on as we are not next of kin). Why does a hospital require a birth certificate or baptism papers to release a body after death?
Vital statistic requires that the hospital or morgue the deceased is fully identified as part of issuing a death certificate. Also consider ID Fraud, dead people don't speak, therefore the person social security number is valuable to criminal ,and terrorist organization.
Thanks, Also check with funeral home to see if in fact I am correct, they would know for sure.

The AZ Birther Bill hasn't passed yet. If it does pass, Obama would just have The State of Hawaii send another certified copy of the COLB that he posted online. I wouldn't be at all surprised. I think it should be a mandatory nationwide law that to run for president you have to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are a citizen, Obama doesn't like that idea.. I wonder why.

Of course he hates Arizona also because they are going after his future voters.,as soon as he can make them all legal.

Damn, can't wait for the day we are done with him!
I think that could very well be the case. Mr. obombo doesn't like any kind of laws relating to citizenship or immigration. Heck, he don't even mind if terrorists cross the southern border. He is the nearest thing to a terrorist himself. Personally, I think he is out to destroy this country as we know it.

Ive lost my birth certificate and i need it for work, how do i go about getting a replacement? I live in Scotland. How can i get a replacement birth certificate?
County office, show up in person, $18 each.
If you have lost your original birth certificate, you will be instructed to go to the State Registration Office in the state where you were born, and request them to replace a lost birth certificate. you can obtain a replacement birth certificate in from certain online services.

In order for you to obtain a replacement birth certificate, there are some things you must have. Below are the main things you will be asked to submit.

    1. Your Complete Birth Name.

    2. Your Date of Birth.

    3. Place You Were Born

    4. Your Parent’s First and Last Names. (usually including your Mother’s maiden name.)

The only individuals that can legally acquire your birth certificate are:

    Your Spouse.

    Your Parents.

    Your Grandparents.

    Your Brothers or Sisters.

    Your Legal Guardian.

Keep in mind that official replacement birth certificate records could require you to give more information, but usually a note detailing what you need with the above information will suffice. You will also need to find out what the replacement fee is so that you can enclose it with your letter. Without the fee, you will not get your replacement birth certificate.

For each state, there is a different fee structure to obtain a copy of your birth certificate, usually the fee’s are between $10-15 but, make sure you check before you send in your application requesting a copy. Some states offer an “heirloom birth certificate” but, those certificates are mostly for “petty uses”, they are not legal documents that can be used to prove your birth or legitimacy, so make sure that you are not trying to get an heirloom birth certificate, make sure that you are requesting a copy of your certified birth certificate. How can i get a replacement birth certificate?
